Washington, D.C. — Challenger Center has awarded AIAA with the Challenger-7 Recognition, a national honor that recognizes work with K-12 students that inspires and supports the next generation of STEM leaders.
Challenger Center is a national education nonprofit that seeks to spark a passion for STEM in students by providing hands-on learning experiences and space mission simulations. The organization was founded 40 years ago by the families of the fallen Challenger STS-51L crew to carry on their educational mission.

“When we were deciding how to recognize our 40th anniversary—and as we think about the next 40 years—we recognized the inalienable truth that if we want to make a difference for kids in this country, we have to work together,” said Mike Kincaid, President and Executive Director of Challenger Center, to the audience at ASCEND 2026. “We are giving this award to organizations that have made a conscious and tangible difference for kids. AIAA has done incredible work to help students see themselves as part of our collective STEM community, as tomorrow’s innovators, and future AIAA members.”
That student outreach impact was visible throughout ASCEND this week, with AIAA sponsoring attendance for 13 undergraduate students at the event. This Rising Stars in Aerospace program aims to provide opportunities for underrepresented university students to connect with colleagues in industry, academia, and government. For K-12 students, AIAA provides classroom grants, scholarships, webinars with industry professionals, and more.
“AIAA is deeply honored to receive the Challenger-7 Recognition,” said Clay Mowry, CEO of AIAA. “We are committed to inspiring students to pursue STEM education opportunities that can lead to exciting careers in aerospace. We see how powerful that inspiration can be through our partnership with Challenger Center. Together, we’re expanding what’s possible for the next generation – and we believe the future of aerospace is bright!”

A growing partnership between the organizations supports this student-focused mission. For the past five years, Challenger Center and AIAA have partnered on the Trailblazing STEM Educator Award, a prestigious national honor recognizing exceptional K–12 STEM educators who empower students through hands-on, real-world learning experiences. This work aims to elevate teachers and expand access to transformative STEM learning – ensuring that more students across the country are equipped with the skills and inspiration to pursue futures in aerospace and beyond.
Looking to the next 40 years and long-term future of the aerospace workforce, these kinds of collaborations are critical to tackle the urgent needs of today’s students and prepare them for the rapidly evolving STEM workforce of tomorrow. The journey continues, and our collective efforts have never been more vital.
