AIAA Technical Committees (TCs) and Aerospace Integrated Engagement Committees (IECs) form the backbone of AIAA’s technical community. Whether you are a longtime AIAA member, a new professional, a seasoned industry expert, an academic researcher, a government engineer, or a student beginning your aerospace journey, participation in a TC or IEC offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the future of aerospace while building meaningful professional connections.
At their core, TCs and IECs are where the technical work of AIAA comes to life. These volunteer-led communities advance the body of knowledge in aeronautics, astronautics, and R&D; develop technical products, services, and publications; and help identify and recognize outstanding contributions across the aerospace engineering profession. Together, AIAA’s 71 Technical Committees across six technical groups and 15 Aerospace Integrated Engagement Committees across five Aerospace Integration Groups represent more than 4,000 engaged professionals around the world.
The impact of these committees extends across every major AIAA technical activity and many non-technical activities. TCs and IECs play a critical role in planning and delivering AIAA’s events, including AIAA SciTech Forum, which hosts more than 6,000 attendees and 800 technical sessions; AIAA DEFENSE Forum, a Secret/NOFORN event with over 400 attendees and almost 100 technical briefings; AIAA AVIATION Forum, with more than 2,000 attendees and 200 technical sessions; and ASCEND, one of the industry’s leading space-focused events. Committee members work closely with AIAA staff to develop conference programs; organize technical sessions, panels, and workshops; identify emerging topics and trends; and create opportunities for collaboration across disciplines.
Committee involvement also supports AIAA’s North Star – to be the most trusted source of aerospace knowledge exchange. TCs and IECs lead the creation, dissemination, and preservation of aerospace knowledge. TC and IEC members contribute to AIAA’s eight peer-reviewed journals, support a library of more than 200,000 technical papers, and help develop over 100 continuing education short courses covering a wide range of aerospace topics and disciplines.
Just as important, TCs and IECs help cultivate the next generation of aerospace professionals. Through the involvement of exemplary volunteers from industry, academia, and government, both in the United States and internationally, committees create opportunities for mentorship, engagement, and professional growth. Members support STEM outreach initiatives and student programs such as SUN ‘n FUN, Design/Build/Fly, University Scholarships and Graduate Awards, and Student Paper Competitions, helping inspire young people to pursue a career in aerospace.
Beyond the technical contributions, committee participation provides something equally valuable – community. Members consistently cite the relationships, collaboration opportunities, and sense of belonging they gain through participation. TCs and IECs bring together professionals from every career stage, from students and early-career engineers to senior leaders and recognized experts, creating a collaborative environment where ideas, experiences, and perspectives are shared freely.
AIAA’s TCs and IECs are more than committees. They are communities of professionals working together to advance aerospace technology, develop future leaders, support the industry’s most important events and publications, and strengthen the aerospace profession worldwide. If you are looking for a way to make an impact, expand your network, and help shape the future of flight and space exploration, there is a place for you in an AIAA Technical Committee or Aerospace Integrated Engagement Committee.
Applications to join an AIAA Technical or Integrated Engagement Committee will be open from 1 September to 15 October.
