AIAA announces the formation of a Committee on Standards (CoS) to develop a guide for space propulsion based on controlled nuclear fusion. This guide is intended for senior engineers responsible for evaluating or proposing potential techniques. It would establish a common set of criteria for consideration of conceptual fusion propulsion designs. After 75 years of research, controlled fusion continues to offer a myriad of techniques promising to power terrestrial energy needs. Some of these techniques might be applicable to space propulsion. For such application, there are a large number of specialized technical challenges ranging from mission analysis to plasma physics to nuclear radiation effects on materials. Participation in the CoS is invited for scientists and engineers with experience in advanced space propulsion, plasma physics and controlled fusion technologies.
To apply, please include a one-page biography sent to Michele Dominiak at AIAA by 25 July 2026.
