Arif Malik is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) and serves as the AIAA UTD Student Branch faculty advisor.
In 2025, Malik was one of six faculty advisors selected to receive the AIAA Faculty Advisor Award in recognition of his extraordinary efforts in growing and mentoring the UTD student branch. Through his leadership, the student branch has strengthened its internal community while expanding collaboration with AIAA’s Region IV and other professional organizations.
Following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Malik helped lead a period of rapid and sustained growth. Under his guidance, membership increased from just 12 students to more than 250 members in three years. This remarkable expansion enabled the branch to establish four technical divisions alongside a dedicated business support team. Malik consistently advocated for the organization at both the departmental and university levels, facilitated department-wide communications, and helped position the branch for long-term success.
During his tenure as faculty advisor, the branch has published five research papers, sent teams to numerous international design competitions, hosted dozens of industry and technical speaker events—including the 2025 AIAA Region IV Student Conference—and earned two department-level impact awards. His support and advocacy within the department also resulted in a $6,000 donation to support the conference.
“The accomplishments of the AIAA UT Dallas Branch and the opportunities it has created for students are a direct reflection of Malik’s steadfast mentorship and commitment,” said Ben Jeffery, former University of Texas at Dallas AIAA Student Branch President. “His leadership has been instrumental in expanding aerospace opportunities to hundreds of students at UT Dallas.”
Malik is also a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award. His research focuses on uncertainty-based computational mechanics, addressing interdisciplinary challenges in advanced manufacturing.
