Wout De Backer, an Assistant Professor at the Molinaroli College of Engineering at the University of South Carolina, was one of six faculty advisors selected to receive the 2025 AIAA Faculty Advisor Award, highlighting his commitment to the development, mentorship, and growth of the AIAA University of South Carolina (USC) Student Branch. AIAA Senior Member De Backer also currently serves as the Region II Carolina Section Vice Chair for the Columbia, South Carolina, area.
Under his guidance, the AIAA USC Student Branch, which he co-founded, has grown to more than 80 members and is now one of the ten largest branches within the Institute. The branch regularly participates in AIAA Student Paper Competitions, AIAA Design/Build/Fly, and AIAA forums. De Backer also helped oversee the AIAA Region II Student Conference hosted by USC in late March. These efforts reflect his ability to encourage student involvement and support student success.
Outside of AIAA, De Backer played an important role in establishing the Aerospace Engineering Program within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at USC. He helped develop a strong and well-structured aerospace curriculum. Since the program began in 2018 with six undergraduate students, it has grown significantly, enrolling 120 freshmen in the 2024–2025 academic year. As Director of the Aerospace Engineering Program, his leadership and commitment have supported the program’s continued growth and recognition.
“What sets Dr. De Backer apart is his unique combination of technical depth, collegial mentorship, and sincere dedication to student success,” said Travis W. Knight, Chair and Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of South Carolina. Through his leadership, teaching, and mentorship, De Backer has made a lasting impact on both his students and the broader aerospace community. His work reflects the purpose of the AIAA Faculty Advisor Award and continues to support the growth of future aerospace professionals.
