Michael Denn, an Instructor of Mechanical Mechatronics Engineering at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) who serves as the faculty advisor for the AIAA SIUE Student Branch, was one of six faculty advisors selected to receive the 2025 AIAA Faculty Advisor Award. Denn was recognized for his outstanding and dedicated efforts in establishing and guiding the student branch. He played a pivotal role in supporting the formation process and mentoring the organization through its inaugural semester, laying a strong foundation for long-term success.
Leveraging his industry experience and connections with the AIAA St. Louis Section Education and Outreach leadership, Denn provided the branch with critical resources and guidance throughout the application process. His continued mentorship has helped sustain the student branch and expand its professional reach.
Through his support, students have participated in an industry tour of Boeing’s Polysonic Wind Tunnel, engaged with the broader engineering community at the SciFest Engineering Expo hosted by the St. Louis Science Center, and presented undergraduate research at the AIAA Region V Student Conference. His mentorship also has positioned students to compete in future AIAA design competitions while fostering collaborative relationships with neighboring universities and regional industry partners.
Beyond his work with the student branch, Denn has been instrumental in expanding aerospace opportunities within SIUE. He has promoted aerospace-focused coursework, including aerodynamics and aircraft performance, contributing to the development of an official aerospace concentration within the mechanical engineering program. He continues to prepare students for careers in aerospace by emphasizing the university’s proximity to a major aerospace hub and aligning classroom preparation with regional industry needs.

Denn’s areas of research and specialization include dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, systems engineering, and mechanical engineering design. Through his leadership, industry engagement, and commitment to student success, he continues to strengthen aerospace education and professional pathways for students at SIUE.
